OLYMPIC WOMEN’S WRESTLING RESULTS - JAPAN (1ST SESSION)


     ATHENS (August 22) - Results of bouts involving Japanese entries in the women’s wrestling competition August 22-23 at Ano Liossia Olympic Hall:

48 kg (14 entries) - ICHO, Chiharu

Pool A
1R - df. Lyndsay Belisle (CAN) by TF, 12-0, 4:12

  Icho turned Belisle for exposure and a near-fall point for a 3-0 lead after the first period. In the second period, Icho executed a three-point throw and then rolled up the technical fall in par terre.

2R - df. Brigitte Wagner (GER) by fall, 5:58 (7-0)

  Icho turned 2002 world champion Wagner over midway through the second period to score a fall and secure a berth in the semifinals.

  Icho opened with a three-point throw, then added exposure and a near-fall point on her way to a 7-0 lead at intermission. Icho chipped away with one-point takedowns in the second period to secure the technical fall.

1R - df. Toccara Montgomery (USA), 8-4

  Hamaguchi led all the way in this rematch of last year’s world championship final. An early takedown and gut wrench helped Hamaguchi build a 5-2 lead in the first period. Hamaguchi added two more points to open the
second period and held on for the win against Montgomery. “I had no worries about facing a tough opponent in the first round today, since I defeated a tough opponent (Christine Nordhagen of Canada) in the first round of the practice Olympics in January,” Hamaguchi said after her win over world No. 2 Montgomery.
The five-time world champion added “I studied some videos of Montgomery with my coaches last evening and wrestled just as we had planned. I think this win gives me the momentum now.”
