SHIBATA TAKES SILVER ON 4TH DAY OF ASIAN C'HIPS
BISHKEK (May 11) - Mizuho Shibata earned a silver medal on the final day
of the women's competition at the Asian wrestling championships, but Japan
slipped to third in the female team standings.
Shibata, a former Asia junior champion, fell to Kazakhstan's Jyldyz Eshimova-Turkbaeva
of Kazakhstan in the 51-kg final at the Sports Palace in the Kyrgyz capital.
Meanwhile, former junior world champions Kei Yamana and Mami Shinkai had
to settle for bronze medals at 59 and 67 kg, respectively.
And with the defaults at 48 kg and 63 kg previous day, Japan -- with two
gold medals, a silver and two bronze -- slipped into the third place in
the female team rankings after China and Kazakhstan.
Results of individual bouts:
51 kg - SHIBATA, Mizuho (2nd, 6 entries)
SF - df. Park Yeon-Jin (KOR) by fall, 2P=1:27 (2-1, 4-0)
Shibata steps out of bounds inadvertently in the first period, but still
wins with a late takedown. In the second, Shibata moves from takedown to
near-fall and pin.
F1 - lost to Jyldyz Eshimova-Turkbaeva (KAZ), 1-2 (2-0=2:05, 0-1, 0-1=2:05)
Shibata takes the first period from the clinch, but gives up the second
with a late takedown. In a hard fought third period, Eshimova was hit with a
fleeing the hold call, but the call was later removed. In the clinch,
Shibata lost the toss and gave up the deciding point.
59 kg - YAMANA, Kei (3rd, 9 entries)
1R - lost to Yang Senlian (CHN), 1-2 (2-1, 0-4, 0-7=1:45)
Yamana scores late in the first period for the win, but gives up a front
headlock and turn in dropping the second. Yang wins the rubber period with
a pair of gut wrenches.
F3 - df. Salomat Kuchimova (UZB) by fall, 2P=0:56 (6-0, 1:11, 7-0)
Yamana gets things rolling with a 3-point takedown in the first period
and then flattens Kuchimova for the fall off a double-leg attack.
67 kg - SHINKAI, Mami (3rd, 7 entries)
1R - df. Gitika Takhar (IND), 2-0 (1-0, 1x-1)
Shinkai wins with a push-out in the first period and then spins behind
for the last point in the second for the win.
SF - lost to Daria Karpenko (KAZ), 1-2 (1-1x, 2-0, 3-3x)
Shinkai gives of last point in the first period, scores a pair of
takedowns in the second. Leading 3-2 in the third, Shinkai attempts a takedown
in the final 20 seconds and is countered for the decisive last point.
F3 - df. Han Tae-Yang (KOR), 2-0 (2-0, 7-0=1:27)
Shinkai takes first period on front headlock and go-behind. And then, breaks
the match open with a series of leg attacks.
