HASEGAWA, INABA GOLDEN IN BULGARIAN INT’L MEETS

VARNA, Bulgaria (February 14-15) - Kohei Hasegawa (right) and Yasuhiro Inaba (left) won gold medals for Japan in a pair of international meets in this Bulgarian resort city and were named the outstanding foreign wrestlers in their respective styles. Hasegawa won the 55kg crown in greco-roman while Inaba struck 55kg gold in freestyle for a young Japanese squad looking ahead to the next Olympic cycle and the 2012 Games in London.

In the Nikola Petrov International, Hasegawa defeated two-time junior world champ Alexandar Kostadinov of Bulgaria in a first-round bout and then stopped Venelin Venkov, also of Bulgaria, in the finals. Hasegawa’s win over Venkov, an eighth-place finisher in last summer’s Beijing Olympics, gave him his first title in an international competition.

Meanwhile, world student champion Inaba edged Japanese rival Shinichi Yumoto in the quarterfinals and then stopped 2007 world runner-up Naranbaatar Bayaraa of Mongolia in the semifinals on his way to the 55kg crown in the Dan Kolov International. Yumoto, meanwhile, who won the Yasar Dogu crown in Turkey a week earlier with a win over Inaba, rebounded for a bronze medal with a triumph over Naranbaatar.

Newly crowned Japanese national champion Shogo Maeda added a bronze medal at 60kg in freestyle.

In greco-roman, Tsukasa Tsurumaki earned his sixth bronze medal in international competition at 74kg while Atsushi Nakamura bagged a bronze medal at 120kg, Japan’s first for a heavyweight on its annual winter tour of Europe.
