JAPANESE WOMEN WIN 4 GOLD, MEN 5 BRONZE AT ASIA JR C'SHIPS

HUANGSHAN, China (June 10-13) – Japanese women won four gold medals and the men teams bagged five bronze medals at the Asian junior wrestling championships. Chinami Abe (48kg), Kanako Murata (59kg) and Chihiro Hashimoto (67kg) all reprised their winning performances in the Asia cadet championships a year ago, to add junior champion to their list of accomplishments.

Chiho Shimada (55kg) gave Japan its fourth gold medal of the women's competition, but the team title went to China, 72-70. Japan and China each had four champions and a pair of silver medalists, but China had a bronze medalist which proved to be the difference in the team competition.

Meanwhile, the men's freestyle team closed strongly with three bronze medals on the final day of competition for four bronze medals overall. The team, however, had to settle for fourth place in the team results, two points behind third-place Korea. Iran won six of the eight freestyle categories to win the team title with 77 points.

In greco-roman. Masato Oyo grabbed a bronze medal at 55kg on the opening day of competition, but Japan had to settle for seventh place overall with 39 points as three of Oyo's teammates lost in the bronze-medal finals. Iran advanced six wrestlers to the greco-roman finals and won the team title with two champions and 72 points.

ACTIVITIES BAN ON NSSU WRESTLING TO BE LIFTED IN SEPT

TOKYO (June 19) – The activities ban on the wrestling club of the Nippon Sports Sciences University (NSSU) will be lifted on September 28, the Japan Wrestling Federation said.

The JWF board of directors decided to end the indefinite ban on practice and competition for NSSU wresters after a recommendation by the East Japan Collegiate Wrestling Association. September 28 will mark one year since the ban was put in place.

The activities was placed on the club following a sexual assault by one of the members against a young woman in Yokohama. Club members were not allowed to compete as a team or as individuals, while the team's faculty representative and head coach resigned to take responsibility for the incident.

The club's coaching staff and faculty advisors have been reorganized and the team has been allowed to practice since April.

MATSUMOTO, KANAKUBO MAKE EARLY EXITS IN GEORGIA GGP MEET

TBLISI (June 6-7) - Ryutaro Matsumoto and Takehiro Kanakubo fell in the early rounds and failed to place high in the G. Kartozia and V. Balavadze International wrestling tournament, a qualifying meet for the Golden Grand Prix final in July.

Matsumoto opened with a win at 60kg, but then fell in the quarterfinals to local favorite Revaz Lashkhi, a two-time bronze medalist in the GGP final held each year in Baku. Matsumoto had to settle for ninth place after Lashkhi lost in the semifinals, eliminating the all-Japan champ from medal contention.

Kanakubo, meanwhile, lost in the first round at 74kg to Ashkat Dilmukhamedov (KAZ), but got a second chance in the consolation matches when the Kazakh wrestler advanced to the final.

In the consolation round, Kanakubo took Armenia's Aram Stepanyan into the third period and was put in the defensive position after the ball pick-up. Kanakubo, however, gave up a lift and a referee's challenge then slipped to his back from a front headlock and turn.
