GOYA TAKES GR BRONZE ON 1ST DAY OF WORLD JR C'SHIPS

BUDAPEST (July 20) – Nihon Bunri University student Seiki Goya rebounded from an early loss to claim a bronze medal on the opening day of the junior world wrestling championships in Budapest.

Goya fell to eventual champion Eldanis Azizili (AZE) in his opening bout at 50kg in the greco-roman competition, but came back with a win over Pan American bronze medalist Alejandro Grimaldi (MEX) and then defeated Max Nowry (USA) for the bronze medal. Goya's medal is only the second won by a Japanese wrestler in greco-roman since the creation of the current age category for the junior world championships in 1996. Shinichi Hirai won Japan's first junior world greco-roman medal at 120kg in 2008.

Japan's other three entries on the opening were unable to advance to the medal matches, but Tsubasa Fukuda of Takushoku University notched a pair of wins before falling in the round of 16 to finish in 10th place overall.
