JAPANESE BAG 3 GOLD AT WORLD STUDENT C'SHIPS

TORINO, Italy (October 26-30) – Tomotsugu Ishida and Yuta Uchimura won gold medals in men's freestyle and Minoru Akeo added a third in women's wrestling at the World University Wrestling Championships at Palazzetto Ruffini in Torino.

Takumi Yokoyama earned a bronze medal in greco-roman style as the Japanese men slipped a bit from their performance in 2008 student championships, while the women marked a bit of an improvement.

Ishida of Waseda University, a fifth-place finisher in last year's junior world champinships, rolled to four wins without giving up a single period to win the 66kg crown while Takushoku's Uchimura defeated European bronze medalist Andrei Perpelita (MDA) for the 60kg crown.

Manabu Suto of Nihon University was the only other Japanese entry to advance to a medal match, but had to settle for for fifth place at 55kg. This left Japan well shy of its performance in 2008 when the men's freestyle squad took three gold and two bronze.

In women's freestyle, Akeo of International Pacific Rim University (IPU) led the charge with a gold medal at 48kg that kept alive Japan's streak, beginning in 2002, of at least one gold medal at the student championships.

Akeo's IPU teammate Yurika Ito advanced to the finals at 59kg but fell in a close match to 2009 world bronze medal winner Ganna Vasylenko (UKR). Hiroe Suzuki of Ritsumeikan edged Olympic bronze medalist Agnieszka Wieszczek (POL) in the quarterfinals at 72kg, but was pinned by Ali Bernard (USA) in the final.

The Japanese women finished with a gold, two silver and two bronze to improve on their 2008 haul of a gold and two bronze.

In greco-roman, Takumi Yokoyama, a graduate of the Nippon Sports Science University, notched three wins against a loss to win a bronze medal at 60kg – Japan's lone medal in the competition.

H. SAKAMOTO ANNOUNCES MARRIAGE AT TRAINING CAMP

TOKYO (October 22) – Seven-time world champion Hitomi Sakamoto, taking time at a national team training camp, announced that she and a former high school teammate had earlier in the month registered their marriage.

Sakamoto revealed at a training session open to the media that she and Koji Ohara, both currently in the Japan Self Defense Forces, registered their marriage on October 10, the anniversary of the opening of the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Sakamoto said her goal was still to win the gold medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London as “Hitomi Sakamoto,” but revealed that Ohara was part of the reason she decided to return to competition earlier this year after retiring in 2008.

“He encourages me and does everything he can for me,” Sakamoto, adding with a chuckle “With wrestling, he is strict and always tells me 'That's no good!'”

“Still, I feel that our two families are together and this gives me all the more reason to do my best,” the reigning 48kg world champ added.

Sakamoto and Ohara were childhood friends growing up in Hachinohe, in northern Japan. They also wrestled for the club at the high school affiliate of Hachinohe Industrial University.

Ohara had been a member of the SDF wrestling club and finished third in freestyle at 74kg in the 2008 national championships. Ohara won last year's Shakaijin Open for non-student senior-level wrestlers, was named the outstanding wrestler and hung up his shoes. In April, he became a regular member of the Japanese SDF.
