TAKUSHOKU WINS COLLEGE FS CROWN WIN 4 CHAMPS

TOKYO (November 11-12) – Defending champion Takushoku University won at four categories and claimed its fourth overall collegiate freestyle national championship title at Komazawa Gymnasium in Tokyo.

Taichi Oka capped the Takushoku triumph by defeating collegiate open champion Yuto Aizawa of Nihon University for the 120kg crown. Oka became the eighth wrestler to win all four of college wrestling's major individual titles in a single year, and the first to do it in three different weight categories. Takushoku's other winners were Sosuke Takatani, who won for a third straight year at 74kg, greco-roman specialist Yuji Okamoto (66kg) and first-time winner Yasuhiro Suzuki (60kg).

Meanwhile, Manabu Sudo of Nihon won at 55kg after failing to make weight at the collegiate open in August, defeating open winner Mamoru Handa of Senshu in the semifinals.

Seiji Suzuki of Senshu won a repeat of the collegiate open final at 84kg and Waseda's Takashi Taketomi jumped two weight glasses to win the 96kg crown after taking the 74kg title in August.

The team title was Takushoku's third of the year after winning the national dual meet and the national greco-roman championships. Waseda, the East Japan university league champion, rebounded from a slow start on the first day to take the runner-up trophy, one-half point in front of Nihon.

Okamoto was named the tourney's outstanding wrestler.

COLLEGIATE DUALS CANCELED FROM 2011

TOKYO (November 23) – The All-Japan Collegiate Wrestling Federation decided to cancel the annual collegiate dual-meet championship from next year, pointing to the crowded schedule of wrestling events between August and November each year.

Federation officials also noted that it is becoming more difficult each year to reserve Tokyo's Komazawa Gymnasium, which traditionally hosts the collegiate duals each September.

The collegiate duals got its start in 1952 as a dual meet between the champions of the East Japan and West Japan university leagues. The format was changed in 1960 to allow more schools to take part in the championship.
