SHIMIZU, OKA STALL IN MIDDLE OF PACK AT FILA GGP FINAL

BAKU (July 10) – Hiroyuki Shimizu and Taichi Oka each posted wins on the last day of this year's FILA Golden Grand Prix Final, but could advance no further in wrestling's biggest prize money event.

Shimizu opened at 66kg with a 2-1 win over Vladimir Pogudin (UZB), a repeat of their bronze medal final at the Asian championships in Tashkent in May. Shimizu, however, was held scoreless in the quarterfinals and could not get past European bronze medalist Aleksandar Maksimovic (SRB) for a chance at the medals.

Oka, meanwhile, defeated Elmaddin Abdullayev (AZE) 2-1 in the first round, but fell 0-2 to last year's runner-up in the world university championships Ahmet Yildirim (TUR) in the second.
